Hemp hearts are a useful nutritional addition to children's diets, particularly because of their complete protein content and high magnesium. They are not on Canada's priority allergen list and are typically well-tolerated when introduced gradually.
When to introduce hemp hearts
Hemp hearts can be introduced once a child is eating solid foods, typically around 6 to 8 months when introducing complementary foods. The soft texture and small size make them suitable for early eaters. As with any new food, introduce one allergen-related food at a time and observe for 3 to 4 days before adding another.
Age-appropriate serving sizes
| Age | Daily serving | Protein contribution |
|---|---|---|
| 6-12 months | 1/2 to 1 teaspoon | ~1 g |
| 1-3 years | 1 to 2 teaspoons | 1-2 g |
| 4-8 years | 1 tablespoon | 3 g |
| 9-13 years | 2 tablespoons | 7 g |
| 14+ years | Adult portion (30 g) | 10 g |
How to serve hemp hearts to kids
The mild flavour blends easily into foods children already accept:
- Mixed into yogurt with fruit, possibly the easiest introduction.
- Stirred into oatmeal with honey or maple syrup.
- Blended into smoothies where the texture disappears.
- Sprinkled on peanut butter sandwiches for older children.
- Mixed into pancake or waffle batter.
- Incorporated into homemade granola bars or energy bites.
- Stirred into pasta sauce for vegetable resistance kids.
What hemp hearts add to a child's diet
Magnesium. Children commonly fall short of magnesium requirements. A tablespoon of hemp hearts provides 70 mg, well over the daily requirement for toddlers and a meaningful contribution for older children.
Iron. Plant-based iron is not as bioavailable as animal iron, but combined with vitamin C foods (citrus, berries, peppers) hemp hearts contribute usefully.
Complete protein. Particularly important for children on vegetarian or vegan diets, where complete proteins from single foods are valuable.
Safety considerations
- Choking risk: minimal for hemp hearts due to soft texture. Whole hemp seed with shell intact has more potential for choking in very young children; hearts do not.
- Allergies: uncommon but documented, particularly in children with multiple seed or nut allergies. Introduce cautiously.
- THC content: negligible. Hemp hearts do not produce any psychoactive effect at any reasonable serving size. They will not show up on standard drug tests.
When to consult a pediatrician
For children with diagnosed food allergies (particularly seed, nut, or sesame allergies), with feeding difficulties, or with restricted diets for medical reasons, discuss introduction with a pediatrician or registered dietitian.
